How to make a folding chair with your own hands - work stages

The convenience of folding chairs no one doubts. With their help, you can facilitate fishing, picking berries, sit down where there are no stationary places for recreation. And if you also make a folding chair with your own hands, it will become a real value, charged with positive energy. Similar children's models often turn into the favorite furniture of the kid.

Model selection

Having decided to give yourself or your loved ones such a necessary and convenient object, you can try to do it yourself. For a thing to become a favorite in the house, you need to work on it with a good mood and confidence that everything will work out. DIY folding chairs can be of various models:

  • in the form of a stool;
  • with a back;
  • tourist;
  • in the form of a stepladder.

Before you make a chair with your own hands, you should choose the appropriate modification. A stool is the easiest option. The top can be made of dense canvas, wooden battens, a solid round or square board. Four legs are the same in height and width, can be mounted directly or crosswise.

Solid legs for a folding stool are traditionally made of furniture plywood.

A chair with a back is a more functional model. From sitting on it the spine does not get tired. The backrest can be solid (screwed to the base with mounting hardware) or soft (when the fabric is pulled over the supports). The camping chair is constructed of metal tubes interconnected by bolts. The role of the seat is played by a fabric such as burlap or tarpaulin, which is stretched between the spread out supports. The stepladder has larger dimensions than a regular chair. It consists of steps, legs, seats, is quite simple.

Choosing the right model depends on the characteristics that a person relies on. It is important to consider how much the piece of furniture must support, how heavy it is, how often it will be cleaned, and so on.

Materials and Tools

Modern industry offers a huge assortment of plastic folding chairs, the surface of which is hygienic, the weight is small, and the colors are bright, original. With your own hands you can make a chair from natural raw materials. Wooden products, for example, are more environmentally friendly, strong and reliable. At the same time, it is worth remembering that they do not tolerate moisture, they can be deformed under its influence.

A simpler option is plywood folding chairs. They are lightweight and especially suitable for babies. Less plywood - some unscrupulous manufacturers save by using mixtures that are dangerous to human health.

Another variant of a wooden folding chair is from slats, which are made, for example, from birch, linden, or pear (then the product will last longer).All of them have similar properties: relatively soft and light, quite flexible and durable, processed without problems by hand and hold fasteners perfectly. Oak wood is beautiful, strong, and can withstand moisture. However, hammering a nail into it or screwing in a screw can be difficult.

Particle boards are also suitable for constructing such versatile furniture, but the chair will be heavier.

To make folding chairs with your own hands, the following raw materials and tools are useful:

  • wooden blocks for all four legs, as well as backs, seats, crossbars;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • hacksaw;
  • fastenings;
  • stapler, staples;
  • screwdriver, screwdriver.

For the folding chair with your own hands, you need bars: for the front legs - two of 740 mm, the rear - of 470 mm. Laths of backs and seats are also necessary - 320 mm long (the number is determined by the width), frame crossbars - 430 mm (there are three of them). The constructed drawings of a folding chair, at first glance, are quite complex. This impression is created due to many small parts, the dimensions of which must clearly correspond to the required ones. However, starting to do, for example, a folding stool, it becomes clear that professional skills are not required here.

Step-by-step manufacturing algorithm

The stages of manufacture of the chair are as follows:

  1. Preparation of consumables. The bars are measured and cut into pieces in accordance with the given dimensions, sanded to make the surface smooth.
  2. Holes for fastening are planned and drilled, grooves are made to slide the corresponding parts.
  3. The support is being constructed. Usually this is a connection using nuts and bolts of two frames.
  4. It is made of racks (or from another chosen option) a seat.
  5. The seat is fastened to the support frame.

If all measurements are correct and the holes are drilled accurately, the seat moves freely inside the frame. When the product unfolds, its back rests against the frame. Such a chair made of wood is easily transformed.

Without back

If the backrest is not of interest in the planned model, a variant of a folding stool made of wood is suitable. Its second name is the clapperboard easel. The seat in it rises due to the movement of some parts relative to others. This happens because the bars are connected with special loops. When the chair is assembled, the frames are tightly closed with each other and represent a smooth vertical surface. For such a folding stool with your own hands, you need little space, it can stand along the wall, and is also easily transported in an ordinary bag.

A wooden folding chair begins to tinker with the seat. Reiki is attached to the bars of the frame with screws. Then proceed to the construction of the support. One part is assembled, consisting of two legs and a back, and then another, back. On top of the front racks are nailed for the back, and from the bottom - a crossbar. The lower as well as the upper crossbar are attached to the rear supports. It turns out two frames that are connected using mounting hardware. The next task is to attach the seat of the folding chair. Through holes, through holes for bolts, are made in it.

No bolt head should protrude beyond the perimeter of the bar so as not to cause injury.

With back

You will need several bars, a shield (18 mm), a steel bar 33.8 cm in length and 1 cm in diameter, bolts (4 pieces of 7 cm in length and 5 mm in diameter) and washers of the corresponding diameter. In addition, cap nuts, wooden dowels, screws, PVA glue are needed. The operation algorithm is as follows:

  1. Turn the legs towards you with the outside, drill shallow holes for fasteners.
  2. Make longitudinal grooves on the inside, along which later, when the chair is transformed, steel bars will move. Need a circular saw.
  3. Lock the long legs. To do this, drill holes in the bars from the end part and connect the elements using a transverse ligament (its diameter is 2.8 mm).Grease the dowels with glue, and then set the block to the desired position.
  4. Make a bevel on the upper half of the legs (above the transverse ligament). It is intended for making the back a comfortable angle.
  5. Fasten the back using simple devices - screws. Short legs are connected with dowels.
  6. To arrange the seat, attach the bars at the selected height.
  7. Connect to the rack using screws. Between them should be located distance checkers. Ideally, the surface of the seat is neat, smooth, without sharp corners, burrs.
  8. Insert a steel bar between the fifth and sixth rail of the seat. Make holes in the support bars. At the end of work, the bar will be able to move up and down.

If you make a folding chair with a back, it will be convenient to use it, for example, in a village. It is easily taken outside, and when stored in the house does not take up much space. It should be remembered that such models do not involve swaying or uneven pressure on the seat. It is easy to roll over on them, to break the center of gravity. Do not use a chair made of wood with your own hands to stand on top of it. It can be easily broken, falling at the same time, especially if the person’s weight is significant.

Processing and decor

A wooden chair made by yourself can be beautifully decorated. Then it looks original, different originality. You can use a variety of upholstery fabric, velvet, plush, knitwear, tapestry, faux leather, suede. Soft may be:

  • seat;
  • back;
  • both.

To keep the upholstery soft, foam or batting is laid between the wooden base and the fabric. The layer height is on average 4-5 cm.

Comparing these details, around the entire perimeter, the sheathing material is attached to the wrong side of the seat with brackets using a special furniture stapler. If there is no desire to sheathe a chair, the tree can be varnished, painted, decorated with burning or carving. Of the paints, it is easiest to use aerosols in spray cans. If the product is intended to be used outdoors, the paint or varnish should be intended for outdoor use. If the surface of the stool cannot be made smooth, it should be puttied before decoration.

An interesting design option is the decoupage technique - transferring a pattern from paper to a wooden surface with glue. In this case, the legs can be painted in a solid color, and the back and seat can be painted in the tone of the selected ensemble.

A do-it-yourself folding stool looks original if each of its rails has a different color. Such a fun “rainbow” is not only useful in the household, but also able to give a good mood to those who use it. This version of the child will especially please.

Knowing how to make folding chairs, you can easily solve the problem of furnishing a summer house, porch, front garden or greenhouse. The advantages are obvious: mobility, ease of operation, environmental friendliness, ease of use, storage. Children's models can be easily transported by the baby from place to place, and adults can be stored until the right time in pantries, utility rooms. In addition, in apartments of small dimensions, you can design folding chairs for the kitchen or hallway. Without taking up much space, they will always be at hand, they will allow you to receive as many guests as you like in the house.
